Catholic bishops to Mahama: prosecute “well-connected” galamsey actors, not just poor

Ghana’s Catholic Bishops’ Conference on Monday urged President John Mahama to prosecute political and business figures behind illegal mining, warning that failure to act would amount to a betrayal of the nation.

In a statement, the bishops said: “Until those who profit from this menace are held accountable, the destruction will continue. We call on the president to show courage and leadership by ensuring that those responsible, regardless of their status, are prosecuted.”

The Church described the galamsey crisis as a “national emergency” that has poisoned rivers and stripped farmlands, and said Mahama’s refusal to declare a state of emergency was “profoundly troubling”.

“Delay in confronting this menace is a betrayal of future generations,” the Catholic bishops said.

Illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, has expanded despite government crackdowns, driven by surging gold prices and the involvement of powerful networks, some with political ties.

The Coalition Against Galamsey also issued a statement yesterday calling urgently for President Mahama to “rededicate himself to the fight” against illegal mining and making references to his “narratives” and “de facto justifications” for galamsey.
