Even after a monster Lions win, it’s time for Brad Holmes to look around the trade market and make some phone calls

What a big win from the Detroit Lions on Sunday. They went out and smacked Ben Johnson and the Chicago Bears in the mouth and walked out with a 52-21 win. In this game, we saw a total offensive turnaround and a pretty good one from the defense, too. But a problem still persists, and it might be time for Brad Holmes to just bend and fix this one already. That, of course, is the edge rusher problem. Man, I’ve been hesitant to fully agree with fans on this one all summer. Maruc Davenport really was impressive at training camp, and he walked out of this game with a sack, too. The problem is that he also had to be taken off the field twice in this game with two separate injuries. One was an ankle and the other was a shoulder. The latter is the one that we don’t fully know about just yet. In the locker room, Davenport had ice on his shoulder, and he said he didn’t know what to expect. Lions’ head coach Dan Campbell said that the Lions would know more on Monday. We’ll see what he says. But if he misses any time, that puts the Lions in a bad spot. Right now, we don’t know when Josh Paschal, Ahmed Hassanein, or Alim McNeill is going to be back. The Lions got Tyrus Wheat on the roster after claiming him, but he’s been a healthy scratch in the first two games, so maybe they don’t see much there. He has to remain on the 53-man roster for two more weeks per NFL roster rules. Plus, Keith Cooper is on the practice squad, but he’s probably not ready to hit the field in regular-season games just yet. So what do you do? The Lions only have two other edge rushers other than Aidan Hutchinson, and that’s Al-Quadin Muhammad and Pat O’Connor. This team needs help. I know Holmes was super hesitant to go get an edge rusher this offseason, and I don’t think anyone is asking for the Lions to go out and find some big-time guy at this juncture. A trade that makes the most sense and would cost the Lions pennies is to call up the Eagles and inquire about Azeez Ojulari. He’s been a healthy scratch for the Eagles in the first two weeks of the season, and if they don’t want to use him, throw them a seventh-round pick and use him over here. He’s not a long-term starter or a game changer, but we’ve seen him put up some good numbers in the pressures and sacks department with the Giants before he signed with Philadelphia in March. It doesn’t have to be Ojulari, but there has to be someone out there who can come in and help. The schedule doesn’t get any easier from here, with a trip to Baltimore to play the Ravens this week and then the Bengals coming up a few weeks after that.
