HELENA — There were some marquee matchups in Week 3 of the Montana high school football season, but in terms of the 406 MT Sports rankings, not much changed, at least at the top.
There was plenty of movement within 6-Man and 8-Man football. There is also a new arrival in the Class A rankings, after Hamilton improved to 3-0 with an impressive win over the previous No. 5 Libby.
Outside of that, the teams ranked last week in Class AA, Class A, and Class B are the same. The complete 406 MT Sports high school rankings for Week 3 are listed below.
Class AA
Missoula Big Sky made a statement with a 38-0 win over Helena Capital, notching its first win over the Bruins in Helena in 30 years.
Kalispell Glacier, Bozeman Gallatin and Billings West each won by at least 26 points. Missoula Sentinel improved to 2-0, thanks to an overtime win over Helena High.
Upcoming Class AA Game of the Week: No. 1 Gallatin will face maybe its toughest test of the 2025 season, so far, with a road game against Great Falls CMR on Friday night. The Rustlers improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Eastern AA after a 38-10 win over Belgrade.
Class A
Billings Central defended its No. 1 ranking against a top-five opponent with ease for the second straight week, cruising to a 35-7 win over previous No. 4 Frenchtown. Howie Martin completed 12 of 15 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns. The Rams also rushed for 241 yards in the win.
Laurel and Lewistown held serve, while Hamilton crushed Libby 40-0 to move into the top five at No. 4. Sophomore QB Cooper Weston threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns. He’s averaging 259 passing yards this season to go along with 11 total touchdowns (three rushing) for a Broncs offense that is averaging 39.3 points per game.
Upcoming Class A Game of the Week: The regular-season game of the year in Class A is slated for Friday night as No. 2 Laurel will pay a visit to No. 1 Billings Central in a 2024 state championship rematch.
Class B
The rankings in Class B are almost the same as last week, with just one difference. Columbus jumped back into eighth, following a win over Jefferson, last week’s No. 8 team, thanks to a 13-12 home win for Columbus. The Panthers were turned away on a 2-point conversion attempt to win the game, leaving eight undefeated teams remaining in Class B.
Upcoming Class B Game of the Week: Two of Class B’s undefeated teams will meet on Friday night as third-ranked Three Forks will travel to second-ranked Manhattan in a game that could decide the Southern B.
8-Man
Scobey won a battle of top-5 teams against Circle by a three-score margin to affirm its No. 1 ranking. Another key matchup looms this week for the Spartans against Ekalaka, the other undefeated team in the 8-Man Eastern Division.
Belt bounced back from a loss to Fort Benton with a 38-14 win over Chinook, a ranked win that helped keep the Huskies in the top five. St. Ignatius joined the rankings after improving to 3-0. They are one of eight undefeated teams left in 8-man football.
Upcoming 8-Man Game of the Week: No. 7 Ekalaka, which has won all three games by at least 40 points this season, starts a brutal three-game stretch with a home game against top-ranked Scobey Friday night. The Bulldogs will play Circle and Culbertson in the weeks that follow, but they will have the chance to grab the top spot in their division with a win over the Spartans.
6-Man
The biggest shake-up in the 406 MT Sports rankings this week came in 6-Man. Fourth-ranked Savage dropped completely out after a 54-38 loss to Terry. The Terriers were winless before last Friday, yet both losses came to ranked opponents.
Grass-Range-Winnett jumped up to No. 4, following a 38-8 win over Big Sandy. Through three weeks, the Rangers boast the best scoring defense in 6-Man football with just 26 points allowed and held two of three opponents to single digits. Terry did reach double figures earlier this season on Grass-Range-Winnett; however, that was in a 68-12 loss.
Roy-Winifred cracked the top 10 this week for the first time after a 65-25 win over Bridger. The Outlaws have scored more than 60 points in each of their games this season and lead 6-man in scoring with 206 points (68.3 per game).
Upcoming 6-Man Game of the Week: No. 5 Power-Dutton-Brady, winners of its first three games by an average of 33 points, will host No. 6 Lincoln. The Lynx have outscored Big Sandy and Alberton by a combined margin of 121-6 the past two weeks, following a Week 1 loss to top-ranked Denton-Geyser-Stanford-Geraldine.
