Vet explains why persistent diarrhoea in dogs should not be ignored

Dogs generally maintain good health throughout their lives provided they are walked regularly, have a good diet , are kept clean and are given a lot of cuddles and kisses from their owners. Illnesses can pop up here and there, so owners might not think twice if pooches come down with a funny tummy or bring their dinner up sometimes. However, some habits, especially toilet-related, habits should not be ignored. Recent attention to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in cats has highlighted the need for dog owners to be aware of similar chronic digestive issues in their canine companions. While exact figures for IBD in dogs are not well established, gastrointestinal disorders are commonly seen in veterinary practice. Many pet owners mistake the early warning signs for simple stomach upsets or dietary indiscretions. Unlike temporary digestive issues, IBD involves chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract that can seriously affect a dog’s quality of life if left untreated. “Many dog owners attribute the chronic diarrhoea or vomiting of their dogs to having a sensitive stomach, but symptoms lasting more than a few days require veterinary attention,” Dr Aimee Warner, resident veterinarian at Waggel , explained. “IBD in dogs can be managed effectively with the right diagnosis and treatment plan. Early intervention is key to avoiding complications and maintaining quality of life.” “IBD is a manageable condition when properly diagnosed and treated,” Dr Warned concluded. “The key is recognising that recurrent digestive symptoms aren’t normal and seeking veterinary advice promptly. “With the right approach, dogs with IBD can live comfortable, happy lives .” I’m sharing this important information as awareness grows around digestive health in pets.
