A four-year-old girl is dead after falling from a fifth-floor balcony in a sleepwalking accident.

The young girl fell just after 5 am from an apartment block in Calpe, Alicante, Spain, and later died of her injuries in hospital.

Neither parent was at the property at the time, with local reports suggesting her 15-year-old sister had been left in charge of her and her one-year-old brother.

Her mum and dad reportedly took her to a local health centre before she was transferred to Alicante’s General Hospital in a critical condition.

Investigators found her death was accidental and said they had discovered the little girl had sleepwalked out of her bed early in the morning.

She climbed over the balcony railing before losing her balance and falling over the edge, hitting a car parked below before ending up on the ground.

It comes just a day after a 20-day-old baby was killed in the same town after being hit by an out-of-control car, which is thought to have suffered a handbrake failure while it was left parked on a steep hill.

The newborn baby’s 37-year-old mum, who was pushing her in a pram at the time, was left critically injured and remains in a hospital intensive care ward.

Calpe Council has declared three days of mourning for the baby and the four-year-old girl.

A spokesman for Calpe Council said: ‘After the recent deaths of a baby and a four-year-old girl in tragic accidents, we are declaring a period of official mourning as a show of our respect and condolences.

‘Three days of official mourning will take place from today. Flags will fly at half-mast from all municipal buildings.’
