Dick Smith's urgent warning to Australia about surging immigration: 'We're doomed'

A prominent Aussie businessman has blasted the major political parties for not having a population plan to address immigration.

The Albanese government recently announced that the permanent migration rate would remain unchanged from 185,000 places last year, sparking anti-immigration rallies across the nation.

The latest Resolve poll, released on Monday, found that 49 per cent of Australians believe the current level of permanent migration is too high.

Just 27 per cent of the 1800 voters surveyed last week believe the rate is ‘about right’, while only five per cent said it is too low.

The majority (55 per cent) believe the federal government is handling immigration in ‘an unplanned and unmanaged way’, while just 21 per cent say the issue has been managed carefully.

Veteran businessman Dick Smith says the poll sends a clear warning to the government that it needs to listen to voters by slashing the permanent migration rate by more than half.

He also called out the major political parties, including the Greens, for not having a population plan.

‘Every Australian family has a population plan – they can actually have up to 20 children in their lifetime, but none do,’ he told 2GB afternoon host Clinton Maynard.

‘The country should be the same. There should have a plan – whether it be 60million or 100million.’

He accused political parties of being driven by lobbying from big business and billionaires.

‘Not one political party has a population plan, not even the Greens,’ he said.

‘They’re not game and and I’ll tell you why – it’s the greed of the billionaires.

‘Billionaire property owners just want more money, more immigration.’

At the present rate of migration growth, Australia’s population would soar past 100million by the end of this century, a figure Mr Smith says is unsustainable.

‘Not many people think it’s a good number,’ Smith said.

‘There will be a lot of poor people. The wealth of this country primarily comes from the minerals and primary industry.

‘Double the number and in effect, most people are worth half as much, so it’s just not sensible.

‘It will completely wreck our country in the long term as you get to 80-100million people.

‘Look at the roads now it’s going to be worse and they’ll never catch up with the infrastructure.’

Despite insisting he’s pro-immigration, Mr Smith believes the current permanent migration rate should be slashed by more than half to just 70,000 per year.

‘If we went to the long term average of about 70,000, we’ll round off our population to 30million, which I think would be pretty sensible.’

He added that population plan needs to be focused on immigration.

‘It’s got to be, as our replacement level from the birth rate is less than the replacement level,’ Mr Smith said.

‘Australian families are sensible. They’re not having too many kids these days because they’re worried how they can ever afford a house or will they be able to get a job with artificial intelligence.

‘People realise that you can’t grow forever and that one day, you have to live in balance.

‘It’s amazing to me that no political party has a policy that says, ‘look, we’re going to develop a policy on what the best number for Australia and how we should work towards that.’

There are two ways of getting growth – to become more efficient and smarter by doing things in more productive way or to get more people.

‘That’s what we’ve been doing for the last 20 years and it’s not sustainable,’ he said.

Mr Smith believes Aussies will give their support to the political party that eventually puts forward a policy.

He recalled a conversation he once had with then-Greens leader Bob Brown, who told him that he would be accused of racism if they put out a population plan.

‘It’s nothing to do with racism. But those who want the growth keep linking it to racism so they can have the endless growth,’ he said.

Smith previously said he fears today’s young people will have no savings and be forced to live in Chinese-style high-rise apartments unless immigration is urgently slashed.

‘Basically, we’re doomed; we’re going to increase our population to staggering numbers,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

‘Jammed into high-rise like China, many very poor and who just live pay packet to pay packet and have no savings at all.

‘Mainly capital cities, basically, will be like Shanghai.

‘The beautiful houses with a block of land for the kids to play in the front yard and have a cubby house, that will go forever.

‘Every house will be knocked down and replaced with high rises.
