Princess Martha Louise of Norway and Shaman Durek Verrett are telling their love story their own way in their new Netflix documentary, Royal Rebels: An Unlikely Story.

Directed by acclaimed director Rebecca Chailkin (Tiger King), the documentary follows Princess Martha Louise and Durek as they prepare for their wedding and navigate the social media storm that came along with their nuptial news in August of last year. Today’s top videos

Speaking to People magazine, the couple shared they often battle scrutiny over their marriage. Durek chatted about the scrutiny he faced from the Norwegian press labelling his as a fraud as ‘they don’t want a shaman who is Black and bisexual marrying their princess’.

Durek was the first black man to marry into the European royal family when he wed Martha, and their marriage stirred controversy as Princess Martha was married before.

Princess Martha Louise is the daughter of King Harald and Queen Sonja, and would be fourth in line to the throne if she had not relinquished her royal role and duties in 2022, in the interest of pursuing her own business ventures more freely.

The documentary, while showing the happy couple and the highs of their relationship, doesn’t hide away from the fact that the pair have faced hardships together.

When chatting about Shaman Durek’s relationship with Martha’s children and family, Durek calls himself the girls ‘bonus dad’. The documentary also deals with familial issues like Durek’s health problems, as well as grief as the blended family deals with the loss of Martha Louise’s ex husband Ari Behan to suicide on Christmas Day in 2019.

Both Princess Martha Louise and Shaman Durek have been vocal about their love and have said that they have received positive reactions from the public, despite what the press may write about the two.

‘At first, it can be a bit challenging, but it has fortified me to be more about focusing on what we stand for and focusing on what our beliefs are spiritually and how we show up for people and what we bring to the community more so than what people say,’ they said about using their voices.
