Tomas Lindberg: Swedish metal legend Tomas “Tompa” Lindberg has passed away at the age of 52. It was revealed this morning on social media platform Instagram by his friend and former Opeth member David Isberg, as per a report. Tomas Lindberg’s Battle with CancerJust last month, Tomas had opened up about his health struggles, revealing that he had spent a year and a half fighting adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare cancer affecting the mouth and palate, as per a Kerrang report.Tomas Lindberg’s Early Years and Deep Roots in MetalFrom a young age, Tomas was deeply involved in the metal scene. While people often spoke of the “Gothenburg sound,” Tomas had previously explained that the bands actually tried to avoid being lumped together, saying, We did it in different ways but I think we all had the same idea of wanting to make something more of death metal. Known for its sharp, intense metal mixed with melody, the album was carried by Tomas’ distinctive coarse screams and thoughtful lyrics, as per the report. Tomas described the record as their effort to make an important, tighter, and more focused statement during a time when death metal was feeling stagnant, as per the Kerrang report.Though the band split soon after, their influence was felt far and wide, bands like Slipknot openly praised them, and a new generation of metal and hardcore groups drew inspiration from their sound, as per the report.Outside At The Gates, Tomas remained active in the underground. He played guitar and sang in the Swedish D-beat band Skitsystem, and was part of Lock-Up, a supergroup featuring members from Napalm Death and Cradle of Filth, as per Kerrang.
