Classroom Champions: North Charleston gym teacher hopes to enhance safety

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – One elementary gym teacher in North Charleston wants to introduce his students to more activities, but wants to make sure they are playing with safety in mind.
Nathan Boyd teaches physical education at Matilda F. Dunston Elementary School.
“Having fun and just having them be children and run around and enjoy the games we’re playing, that’s what really warms my heart,” Boyd says.
He says he enjoys teaching his students physical skills they can use throughout their lives.
“We’re working on basic motor skills, balance, and other skills that we can develop throughout the education process,” Boyd says.
While teaching his students these skills, he is looking for dodgeballs and softer soccer balls that would be easier for the kids to grip and would ensure safety in games.
“With this small space, as you see, it’s very difficult to play with regular hard soccer balls,” Boyd says. “We have got to make sure that we have softer balls for certain games that we want to play because, you know, we don’t want to have any injuries.”
He says he looks forward to introducing more games in their physical education class.
“It doesn’t matter who walks through that door, when as soon as they walk through the door, you know, they’re my children in the classroom and they’re going to get educated and whatever we’re doing in here so that they have skills that they can take through their whole life,” Boyd says.
