CBSE Announces Special Exam Provisions For Class 10, 12 Sports and Olympiad Students

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued special provisions for class 10 and 12 students who will be appearing for board exams 2026, and will also be participating in national or international sports events and Olympiads. CBSE stated that the national education board has been providing a special opportunity to the students since March 2018 by conducting special examination(s) at a later date(s) for the students who participate in national or international sports events and whose CBSE Board’s examinations clash with the dates of the national or international sports events, including dates of the journey for the events recognised by Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Board of Cricket Control in India (BCСІ). Since March 2020, CBSE has also been providing a special opportunity to the students by conducting special examination(s) at a later date(s) for the students who are participating in International Olympiads and whose CBSE Board’s examinations clash with their dates of International Olympiad including dates of the journey for the Olympiad recognised by Appropriate Authority in India viz. Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education (HBCSE). Considering that CBSE has now started conducting board exams twice a year for class 10 students, and with this in mind, CBSE has announced that the special examination for sports students of class 10 will now be conducted only along with the Second Board Examinations to be held in the month of May 2026. Under the twice-a-year board exam policy, CBSE will conduct the first class 10 board exams in mid of February 2026, while the second will be held in May 2026. So, all students who participate in national and international sports events and Olympiads will now have to appear for the board exams in May 2026. However, it should be noted that sports students will be allowed to appear in second examinations in the subjects whose examinations have coincided with their sports event or with the journey only. Additionally, no separate sports examination will be held after the first board examination or second board examinations. In case, a sports student is appearing in second Board examination and placed in compartment category. For such students, Compartment Examination will be held next year in February or March. “It is must to obtain permission from the CBSE for exemption from first examination as per policy,” CBSE stated. Schools and students should ensure that these students fill the LOC for the main examination. There is no change in the scheme for Class 12. For the students whose journey or sport event will clash with the examination, these examinations will be re-conducted after the first examinations are over.
