Arsenal begin their 2025-26 Champions League campaign with a trip to Athletic Club on Tuesday evening.
The Gunners made it to the semi-finals last year but had their hearts broken by Paris Saint-Germain, losing 3-1 on aggregate despite having beaten the French outfit in the tournament’s league phase.
They will mount a fresh charge at European glory tonight, though, at the picturesque Estadio de San Mames in Bilbao – the site of last season’s Europa League final.
These two sides will still be fresh in one another’s memories – they last faced one another in a pre-season friendly back in early August.
It should be a memorable one for the Arsenal faithful, too, as it ended in silverware, with Mikel Arteta’s men hoisting the widely envied Emirates Cup.
Elsewhere, a certain Viktor Gyokeres scored his first goal after signing from Sporting CP.
He opened the scoring with a sublime header, nodding into the beck of the net from Martin Zubimendi’s cross.
Bukayo Saka was on the scoresheet just two minutes later, before Kai Havertz added a third in the second half to confirm a comfortable win.
They will hope to replicate that feat in northern Spain tonight.
