…Slingerz FC coach focused on finishing unbeaten
Kaieteur Sports – Despite sitting comfortably atop the GFF Elite League table and already assured of the championship, Slingerz Football Club head coach Jamaal Shabazz insists that the official coronation will only come after his side secures victory against Monedderlust on October 4.
The Vergenoegen-based giants dismantled Fruta Conquerors 11–0 on Sunday, a result that further underlined their dominance in this year’s campaign. With that victory, Slingerz moved to 43 points from 15 matches, 12 clear of their nearest challengers, the Guyana Police Force FC and Western Tigers, who are tied on 31 points.
“It will be presumptuous of me to comment as if we had already won the league,” Shabazz remarked, downplaying celebrations despite his team’s commanding position.
“The players and my support staff have done a tremendous job in getting us to the brink in anticipation of the Elite League title,” the Trinidadian stated.
Slingerz FC have been the only undefeated team in the two-round Elite League this season.
Their record is nearly flawless, with their lone blemish coming in the form of a draw against Western Tigers. Every other opponent has been brushed aside, with Shabazz’s men showcasing discipline in defense and flair in attack.
Their statistics speak volumes; 92 goals scored and only three conceded across 15 matches, giving them a staggering +89 goal difference. That balance of ruthless finishing and defensive steel has put them on course to setting a new record for the most goals scored in a national league season under the GFF’s watch.
“Scoring 92 goals thus far and only having three scored against you is a tremendous feat,” Shabazz said. “Three more games and a win in the next will officially give us the league title.”
Business Still to be Done
Slingerz FC’s title destiny will likely be confirmed against Monedderlust, but their path doesn’t end there.
The club must still face stern tests in their final two fixtures against the Guyana Police Force on October 11 and the Guyana Defence Force in their closing game. Interestingly, in the first half of the season, Slingerz edged both military teams by narrow 1–0 margins.
This is Shabazz’ first time coaching at the club level in Guyana, and he has wasted little time in stamping his authority. His philosophy has translated into consistency, discipline, and an unmatched winning mentality.
For Shabazz, the mission has always been to return Slingerz FC to the pinnacle of domestic football and deliver their second Elite League title.
When the dust settles after the Monedderlust fixture on October 4, Slingerz may finally be able to pop the champagne. Until then, their coach’s message remains on of respecting the process and finish the league unbeaten.
