Another city introduces congestion charge for drivers

Oxfordshire County Council has approved a temporary £5 daily congestion charge for car drivers entering six specific areas of Oxford city centre.

The scheme is anticipated to begin in November and will remain in effect for a maximum period of two years.

Its primary objectives are to reduce traffic congestion, improve bus journey times, enhance cycling safety, and decrease air pollution, partly in response to the Botley Road closure.

Certain groups, including community health and care workers, carers, blue badge holders, and residents with valid permits or passes, will be exempt from the charge.

The fee will be enforced using automatic number plate recognition cameras, with a £70 fine issued for non-payment.
