Piastri happy with fallout from Singapore GP

Oscar Piastri believes McLaren’s discussions since Singapore have been fruitful.

Oscar Piastri has spoken out about the perceived “favouritism” of his McLaren outfit towards teammate and F1 world title rival Lando Norris.
Suspicions the Surrey-based side would prefer Englishman Norris to claim this year’s championship have been building in recent races.

Piastri has held the lead in the title fight for months, yet there have been signs Norris has been favoured in pit stop strategies and again when he clipped the Aussie on the opening lap in the Singapore Grand Prix earlier this month.
Norris went on to finish third in Singapore, cutting Piastri’s lead to 22 points ahead of this week’s United States Grand Prix in Texas.

Piastri said on team radio right after the collision “that wasn’t very teamlike” and “are we cool with Lando just barging me out of the way”.
The incident was reviewed by the team, with the blame landing squarely at Norris, and after lengthy discussions ahead of the US event Piastri is adamant there is no bias towards his teammate with six races left on the schedule.
“Yes, I’m very happy with that,” he said in Austin. “We analysed the incident. There has been responsibility placed on Lando, ultimately, in that collision.
“But I’m very happy that there’s no favouritism or bias. We had a lot of discussions, as you would expect. Very productive.

Lando says there have been ‘repercussions’ after Singapore GP

Lando Norris says there will…

“I think we’re very clear on how we want to go racing as a team. The incident we had in Singapore isn’t how we want to go racing.
“Lando has taken responsibility for that and so has the team. I think it’s quite clear for us as a team that how lap one unfolded wasn’t how we want to go racing.”
Asked if he felt there should have been immediate repercussions for Norris after the dangerous manoeuvre, Piastri said diplomatically: “In a live situation, it’s very difficult to analyse that.
“Assessing whether swapping would have been the right thing to do in that scenario is very tough.
“We talked through it out of the heat of the moment and discussed what happened with a few more points of data and stuff like that.

“Ultimately, I don’t think you can really say what would have been fair to do in the race.
“I would say I’m not expecting it to be redressed on track any time or every time.
“But ultimately, we know how we’re expected to go racing and if we don’t, there’s consequences for that.”
Despite his advantage in the standings, the 24-year-old Aussie also insisted he doesn’t expect any favourable moves from the team for the remainder of the year.
“I don’t think so, no. I think every driver wants a fair chance to try and win a championship,” he said.
“For me, it’s more than fair to let us both keep fighting for that. So, no, I don’t think that’s the approach we should take.

“I don’t think what happened was purposeful, I think it was just a slight misjudgement.
“I’m not going to change anything in how I go racing.”
Norris also spoke to reporters in Austin ahead of this week’s event.
He took full responsibility for the collision and said the team clearly wants to avoid these sorts of talking points going forward.
“The team held me accountable for what happened, which I think is fair,” Norris said.
“Then we made progress from there on understanding what the repercussions were for myself, to avoid anything happening worse than what did.
“The last thing I want is something like that to happen. To cause this kind of controversial talks after a race.

“At the same time, I put just as much risk on me putting myself out of the race as I do whoever I’m racing against.
“Whether it’s Oscar or anyone else. So it’s clearly something I want to avoid.”

Amid ongoing discussion and criticism of the ‘Papaya Rules’, Norris stated simply: “The rule is to not crash with each other.
“One thing we’ve always done good as a team is using and progressing with the framework that we have, to allow both of us as drivers to trust each other and the team.
“And that’s a lot of the reason for why we’re a stronger team than anyone else.”
