Norfolk Co. Sheriff Patrick McDermott misused campaign funds, officials say

Norfolk County Sheriff Patrick McDermott is facing serious consequences after state officials found he misused campaign funds for personal and business-related expenses. The Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance (OCPF) announced that McDermott will pay more than $36,000 to resolve the violations.
According to the OCPF resolution, McDermott spent around $37,000 from his campaign account between August 2022 and the end of 2023—starting three months before he was elected. The funds were used for services tied to his private business, events and donations connected to his nonprofit, Norfolk Sheriff’s Office Cares, and meals for a real estate meeting.
On social media, McDermott promotes himself as a personal development coach and real estate investor.
In a statement, McDermott said the spending was “intended for legitimate political purposes,” but agreed to repay the funds “in the spirit of compliance and transparency.”
Public reaction: frustration, not surprise
Local residents say they’re disappointed—but not shocked.
“Here’s another eye-rolling situation,” said Nigel Smith of Dedham. “Why shouldn’t people be outraged if there’s just blatant corruption?”
“If somebody’s supposed to be an example, it makes it even more disturbing,” Joanie, another resident, said.
Reverend Jane Lawrence added, “I think it goes all the way to the top—to the White House.”
When asked if the case made her lose faith in elected officials, she replied, “Well, I never had a lot to begin with.”
McDermott’s office declined to comment, citing restrictions on discussing campaign-related matters.
