Metro Detroit nonprofits warn that tightening resources could have major implications for education, public safety, and shelters for victims of domestic violence.
Dr. Sharman Davenport, president and CEO of Turning Point, and Christine Kinal, CEO of HAVEN, shared concerns about the potential impact on crisis services.
“If someone is in crisis, trying to escape an abuser, and the shelter beds were full, a nonprofit might be able to get them a hotel room. That wouldn’t be an option,” said Davenport.
Kinal added that a 24-hour hotline might have to reduce its hours.
“As we know, domestic violence can happen anywhere, at any time. And help might not be there,” said Kinal.
The warnings underscore the importance of funding and resources in maintaining vital services for those in immediate danger.
