If you have scrolled through your social media accounts, chances are high that your feed is filled with portraits of friends and strangers draped in elegant chiffon sarees in different colours. All thanks to Google’s Gemini Nano AI tool, which made it possible to turn simple selfies into elegant, retro-style images with saree looks. While many are busy living their Bollywood fantasies using the AI tool, not everyone is impressed.
Among those who couldn’t just wrap their head around the latest vintage saree AI edits is Shantanu Naidu, who once worked as the manager of the late industrialist Ratan Tata. He shared a hilarious video poking fun at the craze. In the clip posted on Instagram, he joked that Indian women don’t need artificial intelligence to imagine themselves in sarees because they already have plenty in their cupboards.
Shantanu Naidu Playfully Scolds Indians Who Are Jumping On Gemini AI Saree Trend
“Just found out about this AI saree trend. Tum log India me hai. America mein nahi hai. India! Land of the saree. Tumhare kapaat mein at least 15 saree hai, you are asking AI? Itna lazy ho gaya tum. AI ko generate karne ko bola jo kapda tumhare kapaat mein (You all live in India, not America. India! The land of the saree. You have at least 15 sarees lying in your cupboard. You’ve become so lazy. You told AI to generate an image of clothes already in your cupboard),” Shantanu exclaimed in accented Hindi.
His playful rant did not end there. Shantanu drew a funny comparison. He said that the trend was just like asking AI to generate a picture of him with his dog, which was sitting right next to him. Further, he jokingly scolded the AI users for turning to technology instead of wearing the real thing, which is lying in the cupboards. “Ek saree pehno, photo nikalo. Original saree mein tum aur sundar dikhta hai. Mummy ke saree mein toh aur sundar dikhta hai (Just wear a saree and click a photo. You look more beautiful in the original saree. You will look more beautiful in your mum’s saree).”
Towards the end of the clip, Shantanu added that he would understand this trend if people asked AI to turn their images into white wedding gowns since those aren’t common in Indian wardrobes. But when it comes to sarees, the whole trend just doesn’t make sense to him.
