New Delhi | Bengaluru: The government has fast tracked efforts to create a pool of 275,000 chip designers in the country as part of its vision to expand the semiconductor workforce to 1.2 million by 2032, as it aims to make India a global hub for semiconductor innovation and manufacturing.Stakeholder ministries, including the ministries of skills development and entrepreneurship, education, and electronics and information technology (MeitY) are jointly working on a roadmap to address the talent shortage in the sector over the next few years, a senior government official told ET.”There is a clear directive to set up ministry-wise goals and timelines for achieving these so that India has a pipeline of workers across the value chain as we scale up production of made-in India chips,” the official said, requesting anonymity.The multi-pronged approach includes curriculum redesigning, addition of dedicated industry-related courses and setting up of training institutes modelled after global semiconductor centres of excellence across India to extend the outreach and targeted apprenticeship training in the sector to create a future-ready workforce.Live EventsThe ministry of education has already started work on redesigning engineering curricula and also plans to introduce a specialised degree in VLSI (very-large-scale integration) design.Besides, MeitY and the education ministry are giving a renewed focus to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education to build a pool of engineers and scientists, and plans to enhance grants and scholarships to incentivise students to pursue careers in the semiconductor sector.The skills development ministry plans to undertake training for 1,00,000 new technicians, aimed at tripling the number of graduates in semiconductor-related fields.Ashok Chandak, CEO and president of industry bodies India Electronics and Semiconductor Association and SEMI India, said the country will require more than 1 million trained professionals, including a chip design talent pool of 275,000, up from the current 120,000 to establish India as a global hub for semiconductor innovation and manufacturing. “Effective coordination among multiple ministries will be crucial to maximise impact and ensure long-term success,” he added.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
