Puente Romano, the Davis Cup’s lucky charm

Marbella Mayor Angeles Muñoz hailed the organisational and sporting success of an “exciting” Davis Cup tie held at the prestigious Puente Romano Tennis Club, which has reinforced the status of the city as a “lucky charm” for the tournament.

Despite Carlos Alcaraz pulling out of the tournament, citing a need for a rest, the tournament stage proved a sell-out success, which had its complications too with car-parking difficulties. Mark Ward, a UK expat living in Nueva Andalucia, said, “The traffic was a nightmare! We had to park the car in central Marbella and take a taxi. Still worth it though. Martinez and Munar were a treat to watch.”

According to Muñoz, Spain achieved a remarkable comeback from a 0-2 deficit for the first time in the competition’s history. The event, which saw Spain triumph over Denmark, generated an economic impact of over €2 million for Marbella.

“Marbella has once again positioned itself at the heart of world tennis and established itself as a benchmark for hosting top-tier international sporting events,” Muñoz stated. She stressed that the event, held for the fifth time in Marbella, not only boosted the local economy but also promoted tourism. The tie took place under ideal weather conditions at the prestigious Puente Romano venue, accommodating 5,000 spectators.

Muñoz praised the “epic” Spanish team’s performance and expressed gratitude to the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET), the Andalusian Regional Government, the municipal Sports Department, and other involved city sectors for their efforts. “Their work has once again demonstrated Marbella’s exceptional ability to host world-class sporting events,” she concluded.
