Turkish media praise Man Utd transfer flop Andre Onana after ‘fantastic’ Trabzonspor debut

On Sunday, while Manchester United slumped to a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, Andre Onana enjoyed a ‘fantastic’ debut for loan club Trabzonspor – despite another costly error.

Just two years on from his £47million transfer from Inter Milan, Onana’s United career is effectively over after he was loaned out to the Turkish side last week, with Senne Lammens signed to replace him.

Many fans and pundits are glad to see the back of the goalkeeper who made countless high-profile errors during his time at Old Trafford, falling way below the high standards set by David de Gea.

Onana made his Trabzonspor debut on the same day of the Manchester derby and suffered a 1-0 loss at Fenerbahce.

In a twist of fate, the opposition’s goalkeeper was his former Man City rival Ederson, making his debut for Fenerbahce after eight trophy-laden years at the Etihad.

While it was not the result he wanted, Onana’s performance was hailed by the Turkish media, especially given that Fenerbahce dominated the game after Trabzonspor were reduced to 10 men after just 20 minutes.

According to FotMob, the Cameroon international faced 29 shots, nine on target and made eight saves, four of which were diving saves, with 1.63 goals prevented.

He was however partly to blame for Fenerbahce’s goal. While able to save former United midfielder Fred’s low shot from the edge of the box, he was unable to parry it away properly, allowing Sebastian Szymanski to pounce on the loose ball and tee up Youssef En-Nesyri for an easy tap-in.

Nevertheless, Turkish outlet Milliyet declared Onana ‘the star of the match’, adding: ‘He played a fantastic game and his experience is so evident.’

Taka Gazete said: ‘The 29-year-old, who exuded confidence in goal, made several crucial saves throughout the match and stood in the way of the widening gap.’

‘Onana didn’t look out of place compared to his debut,’ Fanatik added.

‘After Okay [Yokuslu] was sent off and Trabzonspor were reduced to 10 men, Onana kept his team in the match with his saves. He cleared the ball off the post for En Nesyri’s goal and fought back as far as he could on his return.

‘His performance was enough to make one forget his dark days at United.’

Metro at the Match: Man City 3-0 Man Utd

Metro at the Match returns to bring you all the analysis from the biggest games of the season.
Here are our team’s key takeaways from Manchester City’s dominant 3-0 win over Manchester United at the Etihad.
There were mistakes, but this was not an entirely abject performance from Manchester United and, as Bernardo Silva noted at half-time, they appear to have improved on last season. That has to be a good thing, but it may be a bleak realisation for Red Devils fans that even an improved United are still a long, long way behind a City not even at their peak. – Phil Haigh, sports reporter.
I just do not understand Amorim’s system. If you’re playing with wing-backs you have to use the width and it seems like he consistently instructs his centre-backs and goalkeeper to pass into the centre. It just makes no sense. – Alex Moneypenny

The Red Devils really don’t look in good shape 😬 Manchester City destroyed Manchester United in the first Manchester derby of the Premier League season, and it’s caused lots more questions for United manager Ruben Amorim. But City are starting to look more like title contenders after a tough couple of results. @diffknock @alexmoneypenny #manchesterunited #mancity #premierleague #amorim #metroatthematch

Altay Bayindir needs replacing quickly. He looks suspect with the ball at his feet, left a lot of the goal gaping for Foden to head home the opener and does not inspire any confidence. Clearly not a top level goalkeeper, but is unproven new signing Senne Lammens the answer? – Phil Haigh, sports reporter.
I thought Jeremy Doku had a fantastic game, his feet, his close control is excellent. Drifting into pockets and getting two assists. – Alex Moneypenny
While Bayindir struggles to convince at one end, Gianluigi Donnarumma quickly made his presence felt at the other. The giant Italian may not have loads to do in an average Manchester City game, but will need to be alert when called upon. That’s what happened here, pulling off a stunning save from a Bryan Mbeumo volley in the second half. Another world class addition to the City squad. – Phil Haigh, sports reporter.

Meanwhile at the Etihad, Bayindir continued in goal ahead of Lammens and yet again looked nervy, though the Turkish keeper cannot be blamed for the three goals United conceded.

And over in Italy, Rasmus Hojlund, another United flop who has been cast out on loan, scored just 14 minutes into his Napoli debut.

While Onana is earning nearly double at Trabzonspor, the club do not have the option to buy him at the end of the season, meaning he could yet return to Manchester.

But if he keeps these performances up, it stands to reason that there will be transfer interest in the keeper and not only from the Super Lig side.
