Power outage in Port Moresby on eve of 50th Independence Celebrations

As PNG prepares to mark its historic 50th Independence Anniversary, the nation’s capital, Port Moresby, has been plunged into darkness following an unexpected power outage and accompanying water disruption.

The blackout, which began earlier this evening, comes at a critical time when families and communities are making final preparations for the much-anticipated celebrations scheduled for tomorrow, September 16.

This unplanned outage has caused significant inconvenience for households and businesses alike in preparation of the Golden Jubilee.

According to a message released by PNG Power, the outage was not scheduled and is the result of a technical fault in the power distribution system. The PNG Power technical team is currently working to identify and fix the issue as quickly as possible.

“We are working around the clock to restore supply,” the statement read. Power is expected to be restored before 11:00 PM tonight

The city is currently hosting high-profile guests, including Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Edward, international singer Akon, and other prominent politicians and figures from across the Pacific and Asia.

The 50th Independence Anniversary is expected to be marked with spectacular events across the country, and Port Moresby is at the heart of the national festivities including the flag raising and lowering and an event at Sir John Guise Stadium among others
