Scottish town crowned among best in world 'to see autumn colours' beating Italy

A town in Scotland has been named one of the best places in the world this autumn. It was praised for its idyllic woodlands and attractions. On September 3, Lonely Planet shared a list of “beautiful destinations to see fall colours in 2025”. A total of 10 places across the globe are featured on the prestigious roundup. Coming in at number six on the list is Pitlochry in Perth and Kinross. The town is the only Scottish destination to appear on Lonely Planet’s roundup. Pitlochry is a popular tourist spot in Scotland, especially during the autumn season. It is renowned for its picturesque scenery, with the surrounding forests draped in vibrant shades of red, gold, and orange. The extensive woodland is a popular destination to soak in the colours of autumn. Lonely Planet praised the Enchanted Forest, which is a sound and light show held in Faskally Wood each year. The woodland’s ancient trees, loch, and pathways play host to light installations, immersive soundscapes, and choreographed projections. Lonely Planet wrote: “Scotland’s pine forests might not change colour, but its deciduous trees offer some of the finest fall hues in Europe. Walk out of town to the dam and fish ladder, which separates the Tummel River and Loch Faskally, to get the perfect view of waterside trees as they shed their leaves. “Each October, Pitlochry also plays host to the Enchanted Forest, a nightly event that sees the trees lit up to soaring music in the woods just outside town.” In terms of places to stay around Pitlochry, there are plenty of options to choose from. The town is home to popular hotels, holiday rentals, and more. One hotel that is currently available to book at a significant discount is the Fisher’s Hotel , which is the largest hotel in Pitlochry. At the moment, an overnight stay at the hotel can be booked for £89—a reduction of 41 per cent. The Fisher’s Hotel features 139 guest rooms, as well as a selection of restaurants and bars. The hotel also hosts regular murder mystery nights and other events. On Tripadvisor , the Fisher’s Hotel has an overall score of 3.5 out of five based on 2,188 ratings. Reviews have described the hotel as “relaxing” and “wonderful”, though another recent visitor called the accommodation “average and three star at best”. Elsewhere, The Whisky Room is a holiday let just outside of Pitlochry that can be booked through holidaycottages.co.uk. Sleeping up to two guests, the property is available for £500 for three nights. The Whisky Room features a lounge and diner with a Smart TV and a wood-burner, a first-floor mezzanine level with a super-king-size zip-and-link bed, and a kitchen and wet room. Outside, there is a private sheltered outdoor patio with a wood-fired hot tub and garden furniture. On holidaycottages.co.uk , The Whisky Room has earned positive reviews. Guests have called the property “lovely” and “peaceful”, though holidaymakers may prefer to stay within Pitlochry. Elsewhere, Nara in Japan was named by Lonely Planet as the best place in the world to see autumn colours this year. The city, which is situated less than an hour from Kyoto and Osaka, was praised for its “sensational views of red, gold and yellow leaves along the paths up to Tamukeyama shrine in its northeast corner”.
