Nishaanchi Director Anurag Kashyap On Why Film Will Make Money This Time, How He Avoids Formula - Exclusive

The gangster heartland drama, Nishaanchi, features Aaishvary Thackeray in a dual role as twin brothers Babloo and Dabloo. Also starring Vedika Pinto, Monika Panwar, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and Kumud Mishra, Anurag Kashyap’s latest is about family, love, and, of course, crime. With a newcomer in the lead, the writer-director spoke about the film’s casting, whether it will succeed at the box office, and why he stays away from formula. Anurag Kashyap on Nishaanchi In the interview, Anurag was reminded about a comment made by Javed Akhtar about his sports drama Mukkabaaz. He had asked Anurag why he made a film with an ending that won’t make any money. Speaking with Telly Talk India, Anurag promised, “This time, the ending will be such, Javed saab, that I will earn money.” About casting newcomers in his film, Anurag stated, “I only look at talent. Can I see the character in them, how much work are they putting in, and how much time are they putting in for the film? It’s not just that I am giving someone a chance. Main character dhoond raha hoon. If I’m making Nishaanchi, then I’m looking for Babloo and Dabloo, I’m searching for Rinku, I’m looking for their mother. I’m searching for my characters. I found it in them. I talked to their families and told them, ‘I will need time to make this'” ALSO READ: Anurag Kashyap Reveals Why He Does NOT Want To Make Virat Kohli’s Biopic: He Is Already… The actors were from Mumbai; he told them that they would have to transform themselves. They have given me four years, and then we started the film.” When he came back to them after making Kennedy, he realised they were fully in character. Anurag Kashyap on keeping to a formula in filmmaking Referring to a comment made by writer Salim Khan that viewers should follow a filmmaker after he has made a few films, Anurag disagreed with the concept a bit. He replied, “If you only work with your own masala, you can become irrelevant. I also take from others. I keep trying new things, and I don’t want to get stuck. I stay away from formula and such people who pull me down.” The filmmaker also recently premiered his other film, Bandar, starring Bobby Deol and Sanya Malhotra, at the Toronto International Film Festival. Bobby is already receiving praise for his transformation in the film.
