The U.S. Department of State has issued an updated travel warning for Sierra Leone.
The African nation has been issued a “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution” warning, citing crime, civil unrest and inadequate health infrastructure, according to the DOS’ Travel Advisory Board.
“Violent crimes, such as robbery and assault, occur frequently in Sierra Leone, especially in Freetown. Police struggle to respond to serious crime in most places due to limited resources,” the warning reads.
Travelers are advised to not travel outside of the Freetown peninsula after dark and U.S. government employees are prohibited to do so. The U.S embassy is unable to provide emergency services outside the capital after dark.
The warning was also issued due to concerns of civil unrest, stating that protests and demonstrations often occur around holidays, large events and political issues that may turn violent.
The advisory also warns that “health facilities, services, hygiene, and quality control do not meet U.S. standards of care” and that locally available medications may be unsafe.
The DOS has listed the following recommendations if you decide to travel to Sierra Leone:

Stay aware of your surroundings.
Do not display signs of wealth, such as expensive watches, jewelry, or smartphones.
