Did You Know Drinking Tea With Paratha Or Poha Can Be Harmful? Check What Experts Say

Most people start their day with a cup of tea, often pairing it with breakfast items like paratha or poha. Tea enjoys worldwide popularity, but in India, it is a cultural staple and a morning ritual for millions.
However, experts warn that drinking tea immediately after waking or alongside certain foods can be harmful to health. Making small adjustments to your morning routine can help you enjoy tea safely without affecting your body.
In a conversation with Local18, Dr Jyoti Singh, a dietician at Mirzapur Medical College, Uttar Pradesh, shared that tea should not be consumed on an empty stomach in the morning. “After a night of fasting, the stomach is empty and drinking tea at this time can increase acidity and irritate the intestines,” she explained.
She added that consuming tea with paratha or poha should also be avoided. “Tea contains caffeine, which inhibits iron absorption from food. It is best to drink tea at least one hour before or after meals,” said Dr Singh.
For a healthier morning, she recommends drinking water, lemonade, or coconut water first thing. After 20 minutes, you can have your tea. These drinks help prepare the stomach and reduce potential harm.
Dr Singh further advised that moderate tea consumption, once or twice a day, can be beneficial. Alternatives such as green tea, black coffee, or homemade black tea infused with ginger and tulsi are also healthy options.
She cautioned against consuming tea or coffee after 5 or 6 pm, as it can affect sleep patterns. “Tea is not inherently harmful. When consumed at the right time, it refreshes the body and supports overall well-being,” she concluded.
