JSS Mahavidyapeetha opens JSS School of Medicine in Mauritius

The JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, Mauritius (JSSAHERM) has said that its MBBS programme has been accredited by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Government of Mauritius, and the establishment of the JSS School of Medicine at Vacoas in Mauritius has been formally approved.

This was disclosed at a press conference here on Monday by Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swami of Suttur Mutt, who heads the JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysuru. Executive Secretary C.G. Betsurmath, JSS AHER Pro-chancellor B. Suresh and others were present.

The announcement marks a major step in the international journey of JSS Mahavidyapeetha (JSSMVP), one of the largest educational trusts with over 360 institutions in India and abroad. It aims to provide globally relevant higher education beyond the shores of India, it stated.

The JSS Mahavidyapeetha has expanded its educational facilities in Dubai, Mauritius, and the United States. Established in 2006, the JSS Academy, Mauritius was the first private higher education institution in Mauritius to offer engineering programmes. Over the years, it has expanded its academic portfolio. Situated on an eight acre campus at Bonne Terre, Vacoas, the academy houses state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, workshops, and residential facilities, they said.

The academy established the JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, Mauritius (JSSAHERM) as a degree-awarding institution registered with HEC in 2018. The launch of the MBBS programme aims to serve the healthcare and human capital needs of Mauritius, Africa, and Asia, the Mahavidyapeeta said in a press release.

The JSS Medical College, Mysuru forms the academic backbone of the Mauritius MBBS programme, it stated.

“”The MBBS programme at JSSAHERM has been designed in alignment with the National Medical Commission (NMC), India, ensuring equivalence and familiarity for Indian and international students. Graduates will also receive structured orientation and preparatory support for clearing the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) in India and other global licensing examinations,” the officials said.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness, Government of Mauritius, has allocated SSRN Hospital, five regional hospitals, and several primary healthcare centers (with over 600 beds) for the clinical training of JSS medical students.

Admissions for the first batch of MBBS students are expected to commence in November 2025. “The institution will also pursue international accreditation in line with its goal of becoming a global benchmark medical education centre in the Indian Ocean region,” the release said.
