Little Theatre completes purchase of first permanent home

The Little Theatre’s “Building Our Future” campaign now includes purchasing a headquarters building that represents the nonprofit’s first permanent home in its 90-year history.
The Winston-Salem nonprofit completed Thursday its $475,000 purchase of a 4,680-square-foot building on a 0.39-acre lot at 4015 Brownsboro Road. The seller is Trena McNabb of Pfafftown.
The group has been located at 419 N. Spruce St. since January 2019.
Once renovations are completed by the end of the year, the building will feature a 70-seat performance space, a large rehearsal room and more classroom space.
“It’s about controlling our own destiny, adding some administrative elbow room,” executive director Joelle Irons said Monday.
“This milestone is not just ours — it belongs to every patron, volunteer, actor, student and supporter who has been part of The Little Theatre’s story. For 90 years, you have carried us to this moment, and together we will carry LTWS into the next century.
“The 70-seat performance space is perfect for educational program performances, the spotlight series and new play readings.”
Irons said the company plans to continue to utilize the HanesBrands Theatre/Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts for main performances, as well as other locations.
Even before the purchase was done, Little Theatre officials were promoting the new headquarters site, particularly a $300,000 fund-raising campaign that is being pursued in part through naming rights of the building itself, lobby, performing space, all the way down to the concession stand and the backs of individual seats.
The fund-raising goal has surpassed the $100,000 mark, Irons said.
The nonprofit is seeking $50,000 for the building naming rights and $5,000 for the concession stand naming rights. There’s also a donor wall recognition for donations of at least $250.
“In a time when many theatre companies are struggling to regain their pre-pandemic audiences, The Little Theatre is seeing record ticket sales and community support, proving that we are a trusted source of performing arts within the community,” Irons said.
“Additional space for classes and workshops allows us to offer more diverse theatre education opportunities for all ages and skill levels.”
