A historic, pretty stone chapel packed with original character in the Trewern area of Powys is looking for a new owner and a new lease of life to take it into the next chapter of its existence.
The former Calvinistic Methodist Church in the Pontrobert parish is set to be auctioned, with a guide price of just £25,000 but of course it could sell for more, via a live-streamed auction conducted by SDL Property Auctions, Thursday 25 September.
Believed to have been constructed in 1837, the stone-built chapel sits on a substantial plot of land on one of the routes between the towns of Welshpool and Shrewsbury, about five and 15 miles away, making it ideally placed to access local amenities. Although positioned on the road between these two locations on either side of the border, the attractive building is surrounded by open countryside waiting to be explored as well as a sweeping, panoramic view of the rural landscape at the front of the plot.
The property maintains many of its historic original features, including stunning stained-glass windows and ceramic floor tiles and an impressive exposed roof structure.
The church has not held church services for many years and has been used in recent years for storage. According to auctioneers, the chapel has potential for redevelopment, subject to the relevant planning permission being obtained.
Andrew Parker, partner and auctioneer at SDL Property Auctions, said: “What strikes you immediately about the chapel is the sense of history. This isn’t just a building, it’s a piece of community heritage that has stood for nearly 200 years.
“You can picture a congregation gathering here, while at the same time it’s easy to see how it could be reinvented as a unique place to live. With the main body of the chapel stretching over 15 metres in length, it’s a flexible space that could be reimagined as a distinctive home or other redevelopment project.
“Buyers are increasingly looking for projects that offer something out of the ordinary, and this chapel certainly provides that. Whether it becomes a striking rural home or another architectural conversion, it’s the kind of opportunity that sparks the imagination and has huge potential.”
The property also offers an entrance porch, inner vestibule, seating area, and former prayer area and bags of potential to become a home or business, subject to achieving the relevant planning permissions. The building is leasehold and being sole with vacant possession upon completion.
