The arrival of the Water Metro in Mattancherry will transform the face of West Kochi, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. He was speaking after inaugurating the Water Metro terminals at Mattancherry and Willingdon Island on Saturday (October 11).
The Water Metro is a game-changer in Kerala’s infrastructure development. In addition to providing transportation, it will serve as a vital link connecting diverse areas such as Fort Kochi and Mattancherry. It will ease travel between Kochi city and West Kochi, thereby improving the living standards of people in both regions.
Mr. Vijayan stated that the Water Metro is poised to make significant contributions to regional development and will also boost the tourism sector. He added that the Water Metro will benefit visitors to the city, islanders around the city, and tourists alike.
A world-class water transport system is being implemented under the Water Metro project. Tender formalities have been initiated for terminals at Edakochi and Thoppumpady, while construction of the Kadamakkudy terminal is in its final stages. Once completed, a new water-based network will emerge, linking Ernakulam, Thoppumpady, Mattancherry, Kumbalam, and Edakochi. This will evolve into a comprehensive water circuit, Mr. Vijayan said.
The Water Metro was inaugurated in 2023 and has already served over 50 lakh passengers, including daily commuters and tourists. Several State governments and even foreign countries have approached Kerala seeking guidance on establishing similar transport systems. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is conducting studies to explore the potential of the Water Metro in 20 cities across India, including Mumbai.
Mr. Vijayan thanked the Varapuzha Archdiocese for donating 22 cents of land for the Water Metro terminal. He noted that Kerala has set precedents in many areas and has developed some of the most commendable poverty alleviation models in the country.
Industries Minister P. Rajeeve, who presided over the inaugural function, described the Water Metro as the first and largest integrated water transport system in the world. He also praised it as an initiative that contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
KMRL Managing Director Lokanath Behera said the Mattancherry Water Metro terminal, built entirely on water, posed significant engineering and land-related challenges. He added that the Water Metro will help employees and visitors reach Willingdon Island without getting caught in traffic congestion.
