Davenport state representative to host film fundraiser to benefit trans youth

Iowa Rep. Ken Croken, D-Davenport, will host his fourth film screening to raise funds for eastern Iowa families seeking gender-affirming care.
Croken will screen the documentary “Jimmy in Saigon” at The Last Picture House in Davenport at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23. The evening will begin with a lounge reception at 6:30 p.m.
As a presenting sponsor, Croken will fund all event expenses. All ticket proceeds go towards nonprofits The Project of the Quad Cities and Clock, Inc. Croken raised more than $10,000 from the prior fundraisers.
In 2023, the Iowa Legislature passed a bill banning gender-affirming care for transgender youth under 18, causing families to either halt care or seek it outside the state.
“This is the first documentary we’ve presented in the film series and I’m very pleased and grateful to filmmaker Peter McDowell and distributor Dark Star Pictures for making it available in support of trans youth,” Croken said in the press release announcing the fundraiser.
In “Jimmy in Saigon,” director Peter McDowell investigates the life and death of his brother Jimmy, a Vietnam War veteran who died at 24 as a civilian in Saigon in 1972. The film lasts 1 hour 29 minutes.
The documentary premiered in London at the British Film Institute Flare Festival in 2022. The documentary has won the Reeling Chicago Audience Award, the Amsterdam Roze Filmdagen Jury Award and the GAZE Dublin Best Documentary award.
DVD copies will be on sale at the Oct. 23 screening. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon.
Staff representatives from The Project of the Quad Cities and Clock, Inc. will attend the event. A Clock, Inc. client will speak briefly at the fundraiser about their experience being transgender.
Tickets are $30 and can be bought at tpqc.org/events/film-for-a-cause-jimmy-in-saigon.
