Trump Stuns with Shift in Stance, Claims Ukraine Can Retake All Territory Lost to Russia

US President Donald Trump has suggested that Ukraine, with military support from NATO and the United States, could regain all of its territory lost to Russia and restore its prewar borders. Writing on Truth Social after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York, Trump said: “After getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia Military and Economic situation and, after seeing the Economic trouble it is causing Russia, I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form. With time, patience, and the financial support of Europe and, in particular, NATO, the original Borders from where this War started, is very much an option. Why not?” This comes after months of suggesting that Ukraine would need to give up some of its territory to secure a peace deal with Russia. He also criticised Russia’s military performance, claiming: “Russia has been fighting aimlessly for three and a half years, a war that should have taken a Real Military Power less than a week to win.” Trump described Russia as a “paper tiger” and pointed to economic difficulties in the country, including long petrol queues. He added: “Putin and Russia are in BIG Economic trouble, and this is the time for Ukraine to act.” He also promised “to supply weapons to NATO for NATO to do what they want with them.” Earlier, Trump told reporters that NATO countries should shoot down Russian aircraft entering their airspace, but when asked whether the United States would support such action, he said it “depends on the circumstance.” The comments came as Trump sat beside President Zelenskyy prior to a bilateral meeting at the United Nations General Assembly, which convened on its 80th anniversary amid ongoing conflicts in Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine. In a separate address to the General Assembly, Trump criticised the UN as ineffective, saying: “Sadly, in all cases, the United Nations did not even try to help in any of them.” He also spoke about illegal migration and renewable energy, calling climate change the “greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world.” Other remarks included accusations against environmentalists, comments about the Muslim mayor of London, and claims about Muslims in the West seeking to institute Shariah law.
