Spotify Rolls Out New Perks For Free Users: Search And Play, Playlist Covers And More

Spotify has rolled out a fresh update for its free users in India, making the experience a lot more flexible than before. For the longest time, those on the free tier were stuck with shuffle-only mode and limited controls, but that’s changing now. The Swedish music streaming platform has introduced new features that give listeners more choice over what they hear and how they present their playlists. Spotify’s New Free Tier Features Pick and Play: You can now tap and play any song directly from your home screen without being forced to shuffle through a playlist. Search and Play: Just type in the track you want, hit play and enjoy, no restrictions on order. Share and Play: If a friend or an artist shares a track on social media, you can listen to it instantly. These updates make discovering and playing music much smoother for those who don’t want to pay for Premium. Free listeners will continue to face a daily listening quota, after which the app reverts to shuffle-only playback. Users also get up to six skips per hour, a reminder that full control is still reserved for Premium subscribers. Speaking to The Verge, a Spotify spokesperson confirmed that unrestricted skipping and playback remain exclusive to paid users. Custom Playlist Covers Arrive Alongside the new playback features, Spotify is also rolling out the ability to design custom playlist covers. Free users in 128 markets, including India, can now personalise playlists with unique images, text effects, colours, and graphic elements. However, there’s a limitation: only one cover per playlist can be saved at a time, and every new design will replace the old one.
