If there’s just one feature in World of Warcraft that many players have been begging for, it’s got to be player housing. Those who’ve been playing the game for nearly 20 years have seen this request repeated over and over through those two decades. Blizzard, however, never budged — until now. Player housing is officially coming to WoW: Midnight.
Housing introduces more than just the ability to own your own home. The World of Warcraft: Midnight expansion brings housing as a whole system, and that system will evolve over time. You’ll be able to invite your neighbors over, interact with guildies, and collect décor. Here’s everything you need to know about player housing in Midnight.
The Escapist recaps
Player housing is a long-awaited feature, set to arrive in World of Warcraft: Midnight. When housing arrives in the game, you’ll be able to buy a house in a certain neighborhood. Neighborhoods will come with various activities, and you can share yours with guildies, friends, or players who share your WoW goals. The official release date for player housing is unknown, but we know it’s coming in Midnight.
What is player housing in World of Warcraft?
Player housing is a brand-new system in World of Warcraft: Midnight. For the first time ever, players will get to own their own customizable home within Azeroth.
The only thing close to houses that we’ve already seen in WoW were Garrisons, a feature in the Warlords of Draenor expansion. Those were much different from what Blizzard seems to be cooking right now, though, as they were instanced bases tied to the expansion’s gameplay. Meanwhile, player housing is all about creativity and community.
Starting in the World of Warcraft: Midnight expansion, each player will be able to own a home, make decisions about its design, collect and customize décor, and invite their friends over. This is a groundbreaking update that many players have been dreaming of for years.
How can you get a house in World of Warcraft: Midnight?
Getting a house in World of Warcraft: Midnight is designed to be simple and inclusive. Blizzard has highlighted that every player will be able to claim a plot of land without needing to win it in a lottery system or pay exorbitant amounts of gold.
Unlike World of Warcraft Classic and MoP Classic, houses in Midnight will be shared across your entire Warband. This means that all of your characters will be able to hang out in each other’s homes, regardless of their faction.
The only known requirement right now is that you’ll need the WoW: Midnight expansion to unlock housing; however, you’ll be able to collect décor even without owning a house.
How do neighborhoods work?
Player homes will be separated into neighborhoods: Founder’s Point (Alliance) and Razorwind Shores (Horde). Neighborhoods will be instanced zones made up of around 50 plots, each with a house.
Outside of faction-specific zones, neighborhoods are split into public and private areas. Anyone can buy a house in a public neighborhood (and they expand as needed, so you’ll never be unable to buy a house). Private neighborhoods will be owned by players as either Guild Neighborhoods or Charter Neighborhoods for groups of friends who aren’t in the same guild.
Can houses be customized?
Customization is kind of the whole point of World of Warcraft: Midnight housing. Every home can be tailored both inside and out. You’ll be able to choose from a wide range of décor, furniture, dyes, and even trophies.
The system supports two design modes: a Basic mode for quick, simple placement and an Advanced mode that lets you freely position objects for detailed layouts. Exteriors are just as flexible, offering themed building kits inspired by races like humans, orcs, night elves, and blood elves.
Housing progression, unlocks, and rewards
World of Warcraft: Midnight housing is said to be a steadily expanding system. You won’t just build a house and leave it at that; there seems to be a lot to do beyond just setting things up.
Progress isn’t tied to gold sinks or maintenance fees (although I’d imagine that some gold sinks will exist). There’ll be achievements, quests, and neighborhood endeavors that help you unlock new décor.
Endeavors will see entire neighborhoods collectively completing tasks to earn themed décorations for themselves and for their visitors.
When will player housing be available in World of Warcraft?
At the time of writing, player housing is not available yet in World of Warcraft. Blizzard hasn’t revealed an exact release date for either housing or the Midnight expansion as a whole. Pre-purchasing Midnight will grant you early access to housing.
Housing might appear as early as the WoW: Midnight pre-patch, which could be in late 2025 or early 2026, but this is speculation.
How does WoW housing compare to other FFXIV?
Blizzard’s take on housing seems to take inspiration from similar titles while avoiding some of the pitfalls. Take FFXIV, for example. Housing is highly sought after, but also notoriously scarce.
Buying a house is difficult enough IRL, so having to literally win the lottery to own one in FFXIV feels a little dystopian and hits too close to home (pun intended).
Compared to the various requirements you have to meet to own a home in FFXIV, World of Warcraft: Midnight housing feels accessible.
