Interview with Crissie Ryan, singer, actress & virtuoso violinist

From a musically focused family, singer, virtuoso violinist, and even movie actress, the multitalented Crissie Ryan sat down with Euro Weekly News to discuss her roots, music, and life on the Costa del Sol.

How did it all start for you?
Crissie: “My mum was deeply passionate about music, and that side of the family was incredibly musical. My brother embraced traditional Irish music, while I gravitated toward classical. I started playing piano at four or five, then discovered the violin after watching someone play. I was captivated and knew it was what I wanted to do. My parents enrolled me in the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Later, I moved to London to attend the Royal Academy of Music—Elton John’s territory! It was a hub of inspiring international talent and big names, and it felt like the right step for me.”

During her time at the Royal Academy, Crissie’s remarkable talent grabbed attention, leading to an opportunity to perform with Elton John at the Royal Albert Hall.

Crissie: “He was hosting a charity event, and luckily, because I’m quite skilled at what I do [she said, with a wry grin], they reached out to ask if I’d be interested. I said, ‘Absolutely, oh my goodness!’ We performed many of his works at the Royal Albert Hall. After that, I worked on The X Factor, did freelance gigs with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Barbican, and it snowballed from there. I also performed at Carnegie Hall in New York, which was extraordinary! Alongside performing, I taught violin, singing, and music theory, often in underprivileged communities. It’s all about adding different strings to your bow.”

Where’s home for you?
Crissie: “Home is many places for me. Ireland will always be my roots, where I was nurtured. I have a deep connection with London and a warm appreciation for it. But I’m also loving Spain—it offers a completely different atmosphere and way of life.”

How long have you been in Spain?
“Five years. It was a time when everyone was reevaluating their lives and directions. For me, it felt like the perfect moment to embrace new experiences.”

Did you come to Spain to perform?
“Not initially. I came to Spain for a fresh chapter in my life. The violin didn’t re-enter the picture until about two years ago. It’s become something that sets me apart from other performers, something different to what I bring to the stage.”

You’ve been really busy recently.
“It takes time to build connections and establish a name for yourself. I’ve been fortunate that the uniqueness of my violin performances has led to people knocking on my door, rather than the other way round.”

What were you listening to in the car on the way here today?
“Coldplay. They’re on my bucket list to see in concert. Every day, I explore new music to spark ideas. I’m fascinated by how music has evolved through the ages, though heavy metal doesn’t quite resonate with me.”

How do you see the music scene in this area?
“It’s a tough industry. There’s intense competition and so many expectations for performers today. You have to be a musician, performer, businessperson, and digital marketer all at once. Standing out is crucial, and it requires relentless hard work.”

Cristina Ryan, AKA Crissie, is doing just that. With near-nightly bookings at venues across the Costa del Sol and an artistic pedigree unmatched by most, she’s making waves. From performing alongside icons like Elton John and the London Symphony Orchestra to bringing her passion and soul to the Costa del Sol, Crissie Ryan is a force to be reckoned with.
