Former Barcelona defender Eric Abidal rubbished reports claiming that he died.
Yesterday, rumours claiming that former Barcelona and France defender Eric Abidal had died spread rapidly across social media.
The speculation drew particular attention following reports that his death was linked to complications from a second liver transplant during his long battle with liver cancer. However, today Abidal himself has taken to social media to firmly debunk the claims and reassure fans.
What Abidal said
Posting on Instagram, Abidal said, “Some rumours should never exist. I’m here, living with my family, and everything is fine. I am alive and well.” He thanked fans for their concern and support while urging everyone to focus on “what really matters”.
His wife, Hayet Abidal, echoed his sentiments in a separate statement, explicitly dismissing the “fake news” and confirming that Abidal is “not dead,” sharing a video including both of them on her Instagram story.
Abidal, who turned 46 on September 11, has in the past overcome significant health challenges. He was diagnosed with a liver tumour in 2011 and underwent a liver transplant in 2012, returning from illness to complete a distinguished playing career with clubs such as Lyon, Barcelona, and Monaco and at the international level with France.
