Tensions are running high in the Akan Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as aggrieved constituency executives on Monday, September 15, locked up the offices of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Kadjebi District of the Oti Region, to protest what they describe as unfair and politically motivated appointments.
Led by the Constituency Youth Organiser, Sampson Quashigah, the group accused their Member of Parliament (MP) of sidelining qualified and loyal party executives in favour of individuals with questionable backgrounds or those who supported rival candidates during the party’s internal primaries.
“What we are demanding today from the party is simple,” Mr. Quashigah said. “In all districts, the NADMO director position is typically occupied by the constituency organizer. But our MP is saying the current organizer won’t get the position because he supported another parliamentary candidate during the primaries.”
According to Quashigah, the situation is similar to the NHIA office. He claimed that the Regional Secretary, Samura Limboy, issued a directive that qualified constituency secretaries should be appointed to head the NHIA district offices. However, their constituency secretary, Isaac Abavon, who meets all qualifications, is being overlooked.
“Isaac Abavon is not just any party member. He has contested and won internal elections three consecutive times, served as an assembly member three times, and has been a teacher in good standing for 24 years,” he stated.
The executives allege that the MP’s decision to reject Abavon stems from political grudges over the last primaries. Instead, they claim he is pushing for the appointment of an individual with a criminal record.
Quashigah, speaking on behalf of the constituency chairman, secretary, and other executives, called on the national leadership of the NDC to intervene.
“I strongly believe in H.E. John Dramani Mahama, H.E. Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, and Chief of Staff Hon. Julius Debrah. We are pleading with them to call off these appointments. Let them come down and sit with the constituency executives so we can do the proper thing,” he appealed.
