Mysuru: City of palaces dazzles with Dasara lights

Drenched in festive spirit, Mysuru is aglow with dazzling lights with the Dasara illumination adding grandeur to the city of palaces.

Energy Minister K.J. George inaugurated the lighting spectacle at the Green Canopy on Sayyaji Rao Road on Monday evening. The illumination, one of the biggest attractions of Mysuru Dasara, has grown bigger and brighter each year, drawing huge crowds eager to witness the city lit up in magnificence.

Organised by the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC), this year’s display covers 136 km of roads and 118 junctions, and will sparkle for 21 days — from September 22 to October 12, following Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s direction for a 10-day extension. Nearly 80 LED replicas depicting varied themes have been installed across the city.

According to CESC, the lighting will consume around 300 kW of power and 2.57 lakh units of electricity.

Adding to its magnificence, Kolkata-style lighting has been introduced at select locations, bathing streets in vibrant patterns. Key stretches, including the palace surroundings, Sayyaji Rao Road, Irwin Road, Albert Victor Road, JLB Road, Chamaraja Double Road, and major circles such as the K.R. Circle, Chamaraja Circle, Jayachamaraja Circle, and LIC Circle have been lit up, drawing praise from visitors.

“This year’s illumination has been made more attractive and grander than before. We are even aiming for a Guinness record. The Chief Minister had directed us to make it spectacular. Let everyone enjoy the illumination and celebrate Dasara joyfully,” said Mr. George.

The inauguration was attended by Suja George, wife of the Minister; Tanveer Sait, MLA for Narasimharaja; Ramesh Bandisidde Gowda, Chairman, CESC; K.M. Munigopal Raju, Managing Director, CESC; and other senior officials.

Meanwhile, CESC has urged citizens to exercise caution, maintain distance from poles and electrical fixtures, and remain vigilant during rain.

A 24×7 helpline (1912) has been set up for complaints.

A major draw this year will be the Drone Show at Bannimantap Parade Grounds, another CESC offering. Building on last year’s 1,500-drone spectacle, this year’s shows will feature 3,000 drones on September 28, 29, October 1, and 2, creating beautiful patterns in the night sky.
