The San Francisco 49ers entered Week 6 perilously close to having an emergency situation at quarterback, but general manager John Lynch offered a ray of hope on Thursday.
Starting quarterback Brock Purdy is dealing with a toe injury, and fill-in starter Mac Jones is navigating knee and oblique injuries, per the team’s injury report. The 49ers will take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who enter Week 6 at 4-1.
Jones was limited in practice on Wednesday. However, Lynch appeared on KNBR hours before the week kicks off with a “Thursday Night Football” matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants and suggested Jones is trending in the right direction.

“I think we feel pretty good about where he’s going to be at,” Lynch said on “The Sports Leader” on Wednesday. “If you if you saw him play through that game, that was real-life stuff, you saw it. And you saw toughness and grit, and you saw a guy stepping up and playing through some things. But I think Mac’s in good shape. He’ll continue to work to it by Sunday. We’re hopeful and believe that he’s going to be in a good spot.”

“Brock’s working to the side. He’s working hard to try to get back, but, I think, wants to get back at full strength,” Lynch added. “Mac probably allows that even more so because we’re winning games, while he’s [Purdy] getting healthy.”
Jones is scheduled to meet with the media on Thursday.
Lynch also said that he believes Purdy is happy for the team’s success, and suggested the former Mr. Irrelevant will assume his QB1 role once he returns from injury, regardless of how Jones performs.

Lynch, stated Purdy has been “working his tail off” to return but he would not provide a firm timeline for when the QB would be back, noting that it would be more of a feel issue than a clear-cut decision.
“I don’t think I can give you a completely accurate and direct, because I think it’s just when is he going to feel right to go play? And when are we going to make that decision?” Lynch said. “I can tell you, although he’s not on the practice field, he’s out here working. He’s doing a lot of things trying to build up the strength and get that thing in a good spot. So, I think he’ll continue to do that, and when he’s ready, he’ll be ready.”
