They say life often imitates art, so when this Gavin and Stacey star feared that she looked like she was ‘dogging’ while working in the car, it feels like it could easily have been a scene in the hit BBC series.

Joanna Page, 48, who is best known for portraying Stacey in the hugely popular British sitcom written by James Corden and Ruth Jones, has shed light on her process for writing her new autobiography.

Named Lush, the book is set to come out on September 25, but it appears the production behind it was far from straightforward.

Speaking to the Mirror, Joanna explained how she would go to her garage to have some peace and quiet to write away from her four children and husband.

‘I’d go and sit in our garage to write, and my husband would be like, “I’ll look after all of them” – but that apparently involves him popping in every five minutes to ask me something,’ she said.

‘So then I started going to car parks to write, just sitting there in my car trying to get it done in the middle of the night until I thought “This is getting a bit dodgy” – or maybe a bit dogging-y – so I’d go back and park outside my own house, not daring to go inside in case I woke the kids, and keep writing in my car till five in the morning.’

The 48-year-old went on to explain how despite being excited at first, the task of writing her book – which will take readers behind the scenes of her most iconic roles – was daunting.

She said: ‘When I realised I was going to write a book, I got over-excited, thought I was Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City and went straight out to buy a handbag I could carry my notepad and pens in. Then I realised I was going to have to actually write the thing.’

Discussing her role on Gavin and Stacey, the Welsh star said that she was working in a shoe shop when the script was sent to her and she had almost given up on acting.

‘It completely and utterly changed my life. It’s given me amazing opportunities, wonderful experiences and a whole new family,’ she told Radio Times.

This comes after Joanna revealed that she suffered an injury on the last day of filming for the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special.

Watched by 12.3 million viewers, the episode was the the largest Christmas Day audience in more than a decade.

However, for Joanna, an incident on set nearly left her with burns.

She told The Sun: ‘On the last day on set, I was thinking “pull yourself together”, but I was in such a state I knocked my boiling hot coffee over myself in make-up.

‘I had to get the costume department to wash my clothes. It was good, as the shock of being scalded shook me out of it.’

Lush by Joanna Page is out on September 25.
