The Block explodes: Sonny and Alicia accused of secretly orchestrating body corporate ambush over $150k wine cellar

It’s taken seven long weeks, but The Block has finally erupted into a full-scale war.

All eyes are on Sonny and Alicia during Monday night’s episode, who have been accused of masterminding a secret plot to turn the other contestants against frontrunners Mat and Robby.

At the centre of the storm is the couple’s controversial wine cellar, which Sonny estimated was worth a staggering $150,000 – a luxury addition he claimed would guarantee House Five a runaway victory at auction.

Over a tense ‘losers’ dinner,’ Sonny fumed that the rest of the contestants were being played for fools, branding them ‘chumps’ for letting Mat and Robby steam ahead.

Alicia quickly joined in, telling Han and Can she couldn’t understand why they were even on the show if they weren’t focused on prize money.

‘I do not know why you’re here then. I don’t know why you’re here. Stop being so f***ing nice all the time,’ Alicia raged, as stunned contestants shifted uncomfortably in their seats.

According to insiders, most of the teams hadn’t been particularly worried about the cellar – until Sonny and Alicia began riling them up with claims it would ruin their chances of turning a profit.

‘They were the most passionate about it and convinced everyone else,’ Ben later admitted.

By the end of the dinner, the tables had turned.

What began as Sonny and Alicia’s gripe had quickly spread through the group, with multiple teams demanding answers and a push for the ultimate showdown – a body corporate meeting.

But when the meeting finally came, Mat and Robby were more than ready.

Far from the six-figure cost their rivals had floated, the pair calmly revealed the project was coming in at just $44,000 thanks to a sponsorship deal.

A building company had supplied new wall framing technology for free, with the couple gambling that their winnings would cover the remaining costs.

The revelation left their competitors red-faced and exposed Sonny and Alicia’s campaign for what it was – a carefully orchestrated ambush designed to turn the group against House Five while keeping their own hands clean.

‘Sonny and Alicia seemed like they didn’t want to be the ones to call the body corporate, even though they were the ones who started it,’ Ben pointed out, after being left to formally trigger the showdown.

It’s just the latest scandal to hit the 2025 season.

The season has already seen Britt and Taz accused of ruthlessly sabotaging their rivals by sneering at kitchens and bedrooms during inspections, as well as fresh feuds over free timber supplies.

And with the contestants now racing to complete a guest suite while also preparing their homes for a buyers’ event attended by 100 VIP guests, tensions are only set to spiral further.

The stakes are high – the house voted the best by attendees will pocket $50,000, enough to bankroll entire landscaping projects and potentially shift the balance of power once again.

The Block continues on Tuesday at 7.30pm on Channel Nine
