Former ‘Spice Girl’ reveals hidden eating disorder: ‘You become very good at lying’

Victoria Beckham is back in the spotlight.
In Netflix’s new three-part documentary, titled “Victoria Beckham,” the former Spice Girl reflects on her journey from global pop star to a powerhouse fashion designer and mother of four, but she also shed some light on a major personal struggle.
Her eating disorder.
In the documentary, the woman formerly known as” Posh Spice” recalled an incident that occurred at the height of her “Spice Girls” years when she was weighed on live TV shortly after giving birth to her first child in 1999.
“A lot of girls want to know, because you look fantastic again, how did you get back to your shape after your birth?” TFI Friday host Chris Evans asked on the program before having her get on a scale to see if her weight was “back to normal.”
Beckham, who took the moment in stride as a new mother, has now admitted the moment “hurt” and contributed to lasting issues with her health.
“I really started to doubt myself and not like myself,” Beckham said in the documentary. “And because I let it affect me, I didn’t know what I saw when I looked in the mirror. You lose all sense of reality. I’m just very critical of myself. I didn’t like what I saw.”
“I’ve been everything from Porky Posh to Skinny Posh. I mean, it’s been a lot. And that’s hard. I had no control over what was being written about me, pictures that were being taken. And I suppose I wanted to control that. I could control it with the clothing, and I could control my weight, and I was controlling it in an incredibly unhealthy way.”
“When you have an eating disorder, you become very good at lying,” she continued. “And I was never honest about it with my parents. I never talked about it publicly. It really affects you when you are being told constantly, you’re not good enough. And I suppose that’s been with me my whole life.”
Aside from personal reflections, the doc also takes a long look at her music and fashion careers, as well as motherhood ahead of a behind-the-scenes look at preparations for Paris Fashion Week.
Her husband, former soccer star David Beckham, is also featured. You can see the trailer for the documentary, which premiered on Thursday, below.
