A delegation of Karaikal farmers and Congress leaders led by former Minister R. Kamalakannan on Wednesday evening submitted a memorandum to Puducherry Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan seeking his intervention on several issues.
The memorandum flagged the need for providing electricity connection to charge bore wells for irrigating land belonging to Dharbaranyeswarar Temple, popularly known as Tirunallar Saniswaran Temple.
Besides, it said as per rules, polytechnic students are eligible for admission in Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Institute of Engineering and Technology (PKIET), Karaikal under the lateral entry scheme. Around six seats are vacant in the college under the scheme. The Lt Governor’s intervention was sought to fill the vacant second-year seats at PKIET.
The delegation drew attention to complaints of sexual harassment charges against a professor at the branch of Pondicherry University in Karaikal. There were shortcomings in the committee constituted by the University to investigate sexual harassment charges against the professor. Taking into account the evidence emerging from the audio clips released by a student, the Lt Governor should initiate further probe, Mr Kamalakannan said.
The delegation urged the Lt Governor to intervene on the subject of appointment of Directors in the departments of Education and Agriculture. The two key departments are functioning without directors for a long time, the delegation said.
