A Pembrokeshire beauty salon has been given the green light to expand by relocating from a “bustling” high street to an empty unit on an industrial estate. Nicola Davies, of Eden Beauty Lounge, had her application approved at the October 7 meeting of Pembrokeshire Council’s planning committee. She sought permission to change the use of a unit at Crymych’s Parc Gwynfryn estate from business, storage, and distribution to accommodate her hair & beauty salon, which is currently located on the village’s high street. The approval also includes extensions and alterations to the unit. Read the biggest stories in Wales first by signing up to our daily newsletter here. Despite being contrary to the development plan, which typically favours such developments within town centres, the application was recommended for approval. A report for members revealed that Mrs Davies’s business had been based in Crymych for around 10 years, but she sought the new site to expand her operations. The report further stated: “It has been evidenced and accepted within the submitted Retail Impact Assessment that there are no adequate buildings or land within the Crymych settlement that would meet their needs. “The proposed application site would provide an opportunity to relocate the existing business, which has operated within Crymych for 10 years providing local services and employment, within 55 metres of the settlement boundary. “The Planning Statement submitted with the application states that the owner of the business faces a decision to limit the company’s future aspirations or move elsewhere. “As such, approval of the proposal would secure existing local employment and provide an opportunity for additional employment to be created.” Councillor Brian Hall proposed approval, with councillor Simon Hancock providing support. Committee members gave their unanimous backing to the proposals. Councillor John T Davies, whose ward lies close by, commended the “balanced, detailed and very pragmatic approach” of the planning officer’s report, stating: “There’s a vibrant high street in Crymych. “This is a win-win, it allows growth and employment and supports an existing business, and releases property in the heart of Crymych, which is to be welcomed.” Committee chairman councillor Mark Carter also voiced his backing: “As a small business owner myself, it is wonderful when there’s an opportunity for a small business to expand.”
