Guardians, Detroit Tigers series preview, pitching matchups

DETROIT — This is a preview of the three-game series between the Guardians and Tigers that starts Tuesday night.
Where: Comerica Park, Tuesday through Thursday.

Probable starting pitchers and start times: LHP Joey Cantillo (5-3, 3.36) vs. RHP Casey Mize (14-5, 3.83) Tuesday at 6:40 p.m.; TBD vs. RHP Jack Flaherty (8-13, 4.69) Wednesday at 6:40 p.m. and TBD vs. LHP Tarik Skubal (13-5, 2.26) Thursday at 1:10 p.m.
Series: The Tigers lead the Guardians 4-3 this year. The Tigers lead, 1,163-1,158, overall.
Guardians update (78-71): They’re 10-4 in September with six games left against the Tigers. The Tigers, however, have a 6 1/2 game lead in the AL Central. The last time the Guards played at Comerica Park, they took three out of four in May. The Tigers returned the favor with a three-game sweep at Progressive Field in July.
Tigers update (85-65): They’ve split their last 10 games. Skubal, who left Friday’s start with soreness in his left side, is expected to start Thursday. He’s struck out 23 Guardians and has held them without an earned run in 16 innings this year. Guardians’ pitchers have done a good job against the Tigers (.171 team batting average), but they have power with Riley Greene (34 homers), Spencer Torkelson (28) and Kerry Carpenter (25).
Injuries:
Guardians: RHP Nic Enright (right forearm), OF Lane Thomas (plantar fasciitis), RHP Andrew Walters (right lat), OF Will Brennan (right elbow), RHP Ben Lively (right elbow), RHP Trevor Stephan (right elbow), LHP John Means (left elbow) and LHP Sam Hentges (left shoulder) are on the injured list. SS Gabriel Arias (right wrist) is day to day.
Tigers: RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long (neck), RHP Beau Briske (right forearm), OF Matt Vierling (left oblique), RHP Paul Sewald (right shoulder), RHP Kyle Finnigan (right adductor strain), RHP Reese Olson (right shoulder), RHP Alex Cobb (right hip), LHP Sean Guenther (left hip), RHP Jason Foley (right shoulder), RHP Ty Madden (right shoulder) and RHP Jackson Jobe (right flexor strain) are on the injured list. Skubal (left side) and UT Javier Baez (facial bruise) are day to day.
