James Sutton has reportedly quit Hollyoaks after 20 years of playing his character John Paul McQueen on the soap.
Back in January, the actor revealed he had signed a new contract to stay on the Channel 4 soap until 2026 – despite a number of cast changes amid its move to digital.
James, who has played Jean Paul McQueen since 2006, insisted he would be on screen for at least another 12 months – but it appears he will be bowing out when that contract ends.
The soap star will reportedly step away from the soap in 2026 to pursue a new career as a self-improvement influencer.
Earlier this year, James revamped his Instagram to focus on his new passion for fitness, mental wellbeing and self-help videos – as well as releasing a guidebook for men called Sort Your Sh*t Out.
And James’s exit won’t be a discreet one, as it’s been reported he is set to leave the role in an explosive storyline airing next year.

A source told The Sun: ‘John Paul is a big favourite with fans and bosses alike but it’s felt the time is right for him to say goodbye to the village.
‘James has his eye on a new career away from acting with a self-improvement campaign for men like him.
‘He’s really revamped his own life over the last few years with fitness and mental health transformations and he thinks he could help others do the same.’
DailyMail has contacted James’s representatives for comment.
At the beginning of the year, James shared that he had renewed his contract until 2026.
Speaking on The Tom’s Talks podcast earlier this year, James said: ‘I’m still on Hollyoaks, which is great. I’ve just signed another year.
‘I’m going to be there until January 2026. Yeah. I’m there until January 2026.’
Jean Paul has been at the centre of a string of hard-hitting storylines, including a horrifying rape storyline after he was attacked by student Finn O’Connor.

James, who has played Jean Paul McQueen since 2006, insisted he would be on screen for at least another 12 months

He left the soap in 2017 for a job in Singapore after his relationship with James Nightingale broke down, but returned five years later.
In another huge life change, James split with his girlfriend of one-year Tamara Jane who he dated following the breakdown of his marriage.
The former couple, who went public with their romance in February 2024, have decided to end their romance, according to the Sun.
James unfollowed Tamara on Instagram and removed her from all of his pictures. Daily Mail contacted James’s representative for a comment on the split at the time.
James confirmed his romance with Tamara just five months after the breakdown of his half a decade marriage to wife Rachel Collin was announced.
The couple went Instagram official with their romance last year when James took to social media to share a snap of himself and Tamara.
James captioned the post: ‘Mine ♥️ #DateNight’.
The actor has played John Paul in the Channel 4 soap opera on and off for almost 20 years and some of his co-stars were quick to congratulate him on the happy news.
