Over the last day or so, there has been an uncomfortable and unfortunate buzz surrounding the Milwaukee Bucks in regard to their star player, Giannis Antetokounmpo. After enduring months upon months for rumors that the two-time NBA MVP would request a trade away from the franchise he has sworn loyalty to, a report from Shams Charania stated that the nine-time All-Star had explored the possibility of playing elsewhere for the 2025-26 NBA season.
“However, one of the game’s greatest-ever players is a hot-button topic around the league entering the new season, and a final resolution could still await,” Charania wrote. “In fact, the path to this point was far from straight, and it nearly led the two-time NBA MVP to finding a new home in New York.”
According to the ESPN insider, Giannis identified the New York Knicks has his destination of choice should he request a trade. Fortunately, general manager Jon Horst was able to sell his star on his vision for the roster and that Milwaukee would indeed be able to compete for another NBA Championship this season.
Why have there been rumors that Giannis Antetokounmpo will leave the Milwaukee Bucks?
The Bucks are the smallest market team in the NBA playing in Milwaukee, and the city itself does not present the kind of nightlife or activities that metropolises like New York and Los Angeles offer. When the Bucks made it to the NBA Finals back in 2021, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith did not hold back his disappointment that he was going to have to visit Milwaukee to cover the Finals.
Giannis, of course, is among the NBA’s best players and the league’s media would love for him to playing in a bigger market. For years, the talking heads in the largest media corporations have concocted trade rumors every offseason in an effort to lure the Greek Freak out of Milwaukee.
But, so far, Giannis has reiterated his loyalty to the organization that drafted him and changed his life (as well as the lives of his family members). That being said, he has also said that he wants to remain in Milwaukee as long as he feels that the team can compete for another NBA title.
And the fact of the matter is that the Bucks have been eliminated from the NBA Playoffs in the first round in each of the last three postseasons. This lack of postseason success has led many to believe that, despite what he has said in the past about wanting to spend his entire career in Milwaukee, Giannis may request a trade.
Giannis Antetokounmpo assures fans he is committed to the Milwaukee Bucks
Giannis was not able to join the rest of the Bucks for their media day last week because he had to remain in Greece after contracting COVID. But he is in Milwaukee now for training camp and the preseason, and was made available for the media on Wednesday.
Of course, there were many questions about the latest trade rumors that involved them, and the franchise’s cornerstone assured fans that he is here, and he is here to win.
“I’ve always wanted to be in Milwaukee, always wanted to represent the city, you know, as long as we have opportunity to win,: Giannis said. “And I feel like we have opportunity to win … So I’m here, Milwaukee Bucks, I’m here baby.”
He did add, though, that he could change his mind in a few months if the Bucks are not competitive. He wants to win more than anything, and wants to be on a team that will give him the chance to do so.
Fortunately, the Eastern Conference is wide open for the taking, and the Bucks have just as good a chance as anyone to make some noise come playoff time. If they are able to make a deep run, the trade rumors can be put to bed once again.
