The trailer for Ryan Murphy’s third Monster series, Monster: The Ed Gein Story, is here, and it features a stripped-off Charlie Hunnam and a terrified Addison Rae.
Monster: The Ed Gein Story tells the gut-churning true-life tale of Ed Gein, a man dubbed the ‘Butcher of Plainfield’ for his murderous streak and penchant for robbing graves in his home of rural Wisconsin.
Gein, who died in a mental health institute in 1984, will be portrayed in the new, eight-part Netflix series by Charlie Hunnam, best known for his roles in Queer As Folk and Sons of Anarchy.
The first, bloody and brutal trailer has just landed, and it features Hunnam going full-frontal for a twisted scene involving Gein’s mother Augusta (Lady Bird star Laurie Metcalf), and “Diet Pepsi” singer Addison Rae as Evelyn, a babysitter and one of Gein’s suspected victims.
“Eddie, you’re a mess. Only a mother could love you,” Augusta says as the trailer opens, as a haunting version of Pet Shop Boys’ “It’s A Sin” plays.
Ed Gein was famously obsessed with his mother, who died in 1945, with the Gein story serving as the inspiration for Robert Bloch’s 1959 novel Psycho, and the Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name that followed in 1960.
The White Lotus star Tom Hollander will play Hitchcock in Murphy’s new series. Suzanna Son plays Gein’s only friend, Adeline.
As the trailer continues, Ed Gein’s crimes only get more horrifying, as he asks a seemingly deceased woman “Is this OK?” while desecrating her body.
Hunnam then appears in women’s clothing and wearing a skin mask made of human flesh, as it becomes clear that Gein has both taken bodies from graves, and gathered his own collection of bodies through murder.
Later scenes show Gein’s house of horrors full of various items made of skin.
In one scene, singer Addison Rae appears as Evelyn looking petrified as she’s strapped to a chair in just her underwear.
“I’m such a big fan of Charlie and he’s so amazing,” Rae said of being involved in the series.
“And Laurie and Suzanna — I got to work with so many people that I’ve loved their work. I’ve never worked on a production that felt so intentional in every piece. And I think that is really inspiring to be around.”
Speaking to Tudum, Hunnam revealed how much went into his portrayal of Gein, both physically and mentally.
“I lost almost 30 pounds just to get a more malnourished, light frame. Ed was incredibly lithe. And so that was a big part of the physicality,” he said.
“I spent a lot of time thinking about where his energy was, that he’s not particularly confident or, like, front-foot type of energy… How to not take up a lot of space, not to be sort of front and centre and too confident in my physicality was really important.”
Gein confessed to murdering two women in his life, tavern owner Mary Hogan in 1954, and hardware shop owner Bernice Worden in 1957, and is suspected of being behind several other unsolved missing persons cases in Wisconsin.
After Worden’s body was found on Gein’s property, investigating officers also discovered a slew of human bones and flesh fragments, plus items fashioned out of skin and skulls.
The official synopsis for Monster: The Ed Gein Story reads: “Serial killer. Grave robber. Psycho. In the frozen fields of 1950s rural Wisconsin, a friendly, mild-mannered recluse named Eddie Gein lived quietly on a decaying farm — hiding a house of horrors so gruesome it would redefine the American nightmare.
“Driven by isolation, psychosis, and an all-consuming obsession with his mother, Gein’s perverse crimes birthed a new kind of monster that would haunt Hollywood for decades. From Psycho to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre to The Silence of the Lambs, Gein’s macabre legacy gave birth to fictional monsters born in his image and ignited a cultural obsession with the criminally deviant.
“Ed Gein didn’t just influence a genre — he became the blueprint for modern horror.”
Hot Milk star Vicky Krieps, Queer actress Lesley Manville, and The Wheel of Time’s Olivia Williams will also star.
Monster: The Ed Gein Story lands on Netflix on 3 October.
