Abronye DC granted GHS50k bail

Kwame Baffoe, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), popularly known as Abronye DC, has been granted bail by the court in the amount of GH₵50,000 with one surety.

His legal counsel, Daniel Mantey Addo, confirmed the decision, stating that the ruling came as a relief given Abronye’s deteriorating health. Efforts are underway to fulfill the bail conditions and secure his release.

Abronye DC was arrested on September 8, 2025, on charges of offensive conduct likely to disturb public peace. The charges stem from controversial comments he made, including allegations against the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the ruling government, which authorities deemed inflammatory.

Prior to his arrest, Abronye submitted asylum requests to eight countries, including Côte d’Ivoire, the United States, the United Kingdom, and several European nations. He cited ongoing political persecution, threats to his life, and alleged misuse of state security under the current government.

The case has sparked national debate, raising questions about the boundaries of free speech, political accountability, and the protection of opposition figures in Ghana’s democracy.
