Broomfield-Holy Family softball is the BoCoPreps Game of the Week

Broomfield could be playing for the Granite Peaks League championship AND the top seed in the 5A classification when traveling to Holy Family for its regular-season finale on Saturday morning.
Of course, by that time, the Eagles may already have 5A’s No. 1 seed wrapped up. The classification’s closest thing to the 1927 New York Yankees have continued their tear against teams from Colorado this fall, extending their in-state regular season wins streak to 40 games after Tuesday’s 15-0 win over Silver Creek.
If they beat Horizon on Thursday, they’ll have at least a share of the Granite Peaks League title heading into their second meeting of the season against the 4A No. 3 Tigers. In the teams’ first meeting on Sept. 4, University of Iowa commit Ireland Heer backed up another strong effort on the mound with two hits and a couple of RBIs in an Eagles’ 8-3 win.
Starting Thursday, there are three days left in softball’s regular season. The 32-team regional brackets for all three classes will be released Monday before being played Oct. 17-18. The 16-team state tournament then goes the following week, Oct. 24-25, at Aurora Sports Park.
Broomfield is currently on a 5A-best 11-game winning streak, where it has outscored opponents 125-14. Alongside returning 5A all-state first teamers in Heer and Kiley Wheaton, senior Lauren Martinez has been one of its stellar pieces in 2025. She has two hits in each of her last three games and has driven in a team-leading 20 runs.
Holy Family has won 10 straight, and much of it is thanks to the arm of Stanford University commit Emmaline Humphreys, who, among the seven states playing in the fall, is 25th in ERA (1.02) and 13th in strikeouts (190).
Get this: When Humphreys has gone at least four innings in the circle this season, she’s struck out 10 or more in 10 of 12 appearances.
Whether Broomfield (18-2, 10-0 Granite Peaks League) wins or loses against Horizon (15-6, 7-3) on Thursday will dictate if Humphreys and the Tigers (18-3, 10-1) have a chance to leapfrog the Eagles or settle for a draw atop the final GPL standings.
Before that, Holy Family will try and solve another top-ranked team — 4A No. 1 Windsor — on Thursday. The teams met last month at the Dave Sanders Memorial tournament and the Wizards won 10-1. Windsor (21-1) is 21-0 against teams from Colorado this season, outscoring them 224-50.
Broomfield’s last two games are both on the road, starting Thursday at Horizon, which is 7-1 at home this fall. The 5A No. 14 Hawks (15-6, 7-3) lost 15-11 to No. 5 Erie (16-5, 7-3) at the start of the month in a game that saw four RBIs from sophomore Keyanna Reeves, who leads the Tigers with 30 this season. But they’ve responded since, handily beating Denver South and Legacy over the past week.
The Eagles, meanwhile, got their biggest in-state test of the year in a 6-3 win over 5A No. 3 Cherokee Trail on Friday. Wheaton, who is committed to Wichita State University, homered twice as the team’s three-run win was the its smallest margin of victory of the season. No kidding.
Broomfield then beat Eaglecrest 14-1 on Monday before extending their GPL run differential to 110-to-12 in their 15-run win over the Raptors.
Saturday’s first pitch at Holy Family High School is scheduled for 11 a.m. Game-time temperatures are expected to be in the high 60s with a slight chance for rain.
