CRA Enhances National Capabilities in Managing Internet Resources

Doha, October 08 (QNA) – The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA), in collaboration with Reseaux IP Europeans Network Coordination Centre (RIPE NCC), organized a specialized training workshop on Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6).

The initiative aimed to strengthen national capabilities in managing internet resources within the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector.

Held over three days, the workshop witnessed broad participation from representatives of public and private entities, telecom Service Providers, academic institutions, and other stakeholders. The workshop featured a foundational training on the first day, introducing IPv6, its strategic importance, and deployment planning strategies.

The second and third days focused on advanced technical training, covering network infrastructure, configuration, deployment, cable routing, and network security. The program aimed at supporting participants in ensuring a smooth transition to IPv6 and included practical applications to prepare for the next implementation phase.

The workshop forms part of the ongoing collaboration and joint capacity-building activities between CRA and RIPE NCC, advancing their shared vision to promote secure, inclusive, and resilient Internet infrastructure in Qatar and the region. It aligns with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) action lines, reaffirming both entities’ commitment to supporting meaningful connectivity and digital transformation.

Commenting on the initiative, Ali Al Suwaidi, Director of Technical Affairs at CRA, stated: “As part of the national strategy for IPv6 implementation, we remain committed to working closely with our regional and international partners to equip national talents with the knowledge and expertise needed to advance the country’s digital infrastructure. The transition to IPv6 marks a pivotal milestone in building a robust and resilient national network that meets growing future demands, in line with CRA’s strategy and Qatar National Vision 2030.”

“This collaboration with CRA exemplifies how national and regional partnerships can accelerate the digital transformation journey,” said Dr Chafic Chaya, Regional Manager for Public Policy and Government Affairs, Middle East Region, RIPE NCC. “Joining our efforts in such capacity-building, we empower members, policymakers, and the wider community with the skills and knowledge needed to build an open, secure, and sustainable Internet. Our joint efforts with CRA will ensure that capacity building and Internet governance education are accessible to all, strengthening Qatar’s readiness for connectivity and digital future.”

The transition from Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) to IPv6 is a strategic necessity to keep pace with the rapid growth of digital services and connected devices, including the Internet of Things, smart cities and Artificial Intelligence (AI). IPv6 offers scalability and enhanced security features that improve operational efficiency for telecom providers and ensure users a more stable and secure connectivity experience.

This workshop reflects CRA’s ongoing efforts to build a sustainable digital future that fosters innovation and reinforces Qatar’s leadership in the ICT sector, contributing to the development of a secure and reliable infrastructure that meets the needs of individuals and organizations.

Earlier this year, CRA launched a joint online capacity-building initiative in collaboration with the RIPE NCC, linking the RIPE NCC Academy’s online courses with CRA Training Academy. The initiative made digital-infrastructure-related learning resources on the Internet openly available to all professionals and students in Qatar, free of charge. (QNA)
